  1. INTERCEPT A RAID ON BERLIN
  2.  
  3. On March 6, 1944, the Eighth Air Force
  4. succcessfully launched its first large-
  5. scale raid to the Reich's capital.  Berlin 
  6. had been the objective on several
  7. occasions before, but adverse weather
  8. caused each of these previous attempts
  9. to be scrubbed.  730 heavy bombers
  10. assembled in the skies over East Anglia
  11. and proceeded East. The bombers were
  12. escorted by 796 fighters in anticipation 
  13. of heavy German fighter defenses.
  14.  
  15. The primary targets for this day's
  16. mission were aircraft factories, engine
  17. factories, armament industries, and the
  18. Erkner bearing plant in Berlin.  As
  19. expected, intense fighter opposition
  20. was encountered from the area over
  21. Dummer Lake all the way to Berlin. 
  22. Dense flak defenses were also present
  23. on all sides of the city as the bombers
  24. neared their various targets.

  26.                     YOUR MISSION
  27.  
  28. Your mixed flight of Bf 109s and FW 190s 
  29. has been vectored to intercept a form-
  30. ation of B-17s.  The bombers are danger-
  31. ously close to their bomb release point 
  32. over the Erkner bearing plant.  You and 
  33. your wingman are to intercept the escort 
  34. fighters, while the Focke Wulfs will 
  35. attack the B-17s.  If the 190s are not 
  36. successful in shooting down all of the 
  37. bombers, you may have to attack them 
  38. yourself.
